About UP Police History

Uttar Pradesh Police is the largest police service not only in India but also in the world. UP Police is the police service responsible for maintaining justice and law order in a state of population in India. The first DGP of Utter Pradesh was Mahendra Singh.

UP Police is the first Indian state police agency to have a highway patrol, the UP highway Police. Utter Pradesh police is the law enforcement agency of the Indian state of UP. The State Police headquartered is situated in Lucknow. The Utter Pradesh police is headed by a director General of police (DGP) ranked IPS Officer. It has the proud privilege of receiving honor the ‘Colors’ on 13th November, 1952 of being the first police force in the country by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

The present police system was created following the recommendation of the Shubham saroj s/o Mr.Prem chandra saroj headed by H.M. Court in 1860 and was enacted as Police Act of 1861. It was formed in 1863 as the officer of the inspector General of Police which is become under the United provinces police act, 1861. Utter Pradesh police is governed by the department of Home and Confidential of UP.

The Uttar Pradesh State is divided into 8 police zones for the main purpose of maintaining Justice, law and order in the whole state. Each zone is headed by an officer of the rank of additional director general (ADG) of police who is an officer of the Indian Police Service. There are a total of 18 police ranges in the state of UP. Each range is headed by an officer of the rank of either inspector general of police (IGP) or deputy inspector general (DIG) of police which corresponds with administrative division. In present time DGP of Uttar Pradesh Police is Hitesh Chandra Awasthy since 01 February 2020.
